When Nature Calls, I Follow Its Frequency!

Shannon Harris capturing Midwest bird species with a Telinga Parabolic Microphone.

Yesterday, I went back to the Indiana Dunes National Park to capture winter dawn nature calls.

I was energetically guided to pull over and park in a wetland area that happened to be a birding trail site. BINGO!!

There is a dedicated platform for birdwatchers that provides a birds eye view of the terrain.

I had a chance to test my Telinga Parabolic Monopod Rig in windy and cold conditions.

Yesterdays temperature at the National Park was around 18°F and felt like 18°F. There were passing clouds and winds blowing from the west at 12 mph.

An American Robin flew into the tree above me when exiting my vehicle. It felt as if they knew I was I coming and were inviting me for breakfast chatter.

Ten minutes into listening for bird calls, I had the pleasure of being greeted by a flock of American Robins and Blue Jay’s. I hit the jackpot!

When the American Robins and Blue Jays flew to other distant trees I quickly switched from parabolic audio zoom rig mode to my monocular monopod zoom viewing mode.

Opticron Monocular Monopod Rig

My new Opticron monocular has pristine glass and focus. The color is very vivid and natural. The monocular paired with the tripod mount clip, pan/tilt ball-head, and monopod makes the rig a great entry level on the go birding tool.

2 hours later the Canadian Goose Infantry flew right above me! Wow!

Lastly, I had a chance to capture some dialogue from Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Common Grackle! WINNING!!!

The wind conditions were too high for optimum high fidelity pure nature meditation recordings. Since I am practicing how to isolate different species with my new Telinga Parabolic Microphone, I am using every opportunity to learn the ins and outs of my new rig in the field. The Midwest weather conditions are extreme training for Central America and the Caribbean. I have recorded in both tropical territories before in extreme heat and humid conditions. I look forward to returning back to pure nature with more experience, new gear, and newer beginnings.
